The Translator’s Voice in the English Translation of CCM-related Images in Biancheng

On the basis of Millán-Varela’s framework of translator’s voice and the assessment methodology proposed by Chen Mei & Wen Jun, this study has systematically analyzed the translation techniques employed for Chinese materia medica (CMM)-related images in the four versions of Biancheng. It has revealed how translators’ occupation background exerts influence on their strategic choices which lead to variation in the volume of translator’s voice. The research finds that CMM culture, deeply embedded in the source-text context, presents significant complexity, constituting a major challenge in translation. This paper expands the perspective of translation research by incorporating both the textual dimension and the translator dimensions. It also demonstrates that literary translation serves as an effective means to promote the international communication of CCM culture and enhance the global influence of Chinese culture.
