Abstract Elements in Paintings by ZHANG Daqian and ZHAO Wuji Respectively

    • ZHANG Daqian’s paintings are known for his pioneering techniques which are ink-splashing and color-splashing, while ZHAO Wuji (ZAO Wou-Ki)’s works are characterized by colors and lines which are fluid and blending. These abstract elements which strikes the audience of their paintings are crucial to both the two artists’ expressive styles and represent the most apparent similarities in their works. Both artists center their work around traditional Chinese culture, and they showcase unique perspectives on the fusion of Chinese and Western fine arts. They, however, present different artistic styles under similar guiding principles. By examining the similar abstract elements in ZHANG’s ink-splashing landscapes and ZHAO’s mature abstract paintings, this study facilitates a comparison of the Chinese and Western artistic elements in their works.
