A Review of Studies of Relations between Chinese Compounds and Morphemes

The study of relations between compounds and morphemes has long been the bottleneck of linguistic study. On the basis of examining one-hundred-year research of Chinese compounds and morphemes, this paper has reviewed the history of studying the two from perspectives of their grammar, semantics and word order and has made brief comments on them. The studies concerning the frequency of word formation of morphemes, the internal mechanism of morpheme choice, especially the relations between compounds in stone inscription and morphemes have yet to be deepened.
