Abstract: This paper has analyzed the features of the ZHANG Da-qian style of calligraphy: ruggedness as a whole, flexibility in writing, seriousness of its structure, and leanness of its artistic conception. They were brought about on the basis of inheriting the excellent tradition of Chinese calligraphy, stressing the study of the simplicity-oriented epigraphic writing, pursuit of conception-oriented free expression, combination with painting and adaptation to the time. In the universal feature of grandeur, the ZHANG Da-qian style of calligraphy protrudes its magnificence. One should fully know the features of such style of calligraphy when studying and appreciating it. Only in this way can he grasp its nature of simplicity and magnificence.
