Abstract:
The well-known historic and cultural city Xinghua fostered the authors of four great works, e.g. SHI Nai-an, the author of Outlaws of the Marsh during the transition of Yuan and Ming Dynasties, LI Chun-fang who proofread the novel A Journey to the West in the middle of Ming Dynasty, LU Xi-xing who created Apotheosized Historical Novel and the composer of On Evils, LI Qing. These four works have been sparkling and have rarely seen their rivals in either Chinese or foreign history. The initiative model of Outlaws of the Marsh brought about the publication of A Journey to the West, Apotheosized Historical Novel and On Evils. Various groups of writers and readers appeared one after another due to the gathering of talents, the prosperity in writing, the economic development and social stability in Xinghua during Ming and Qing periods. This provided the soil for the birth of the great four works and the city hence became an important base for Ming and Qing novels.
