From Shakespeare to Marvel: The Evolution of English and Cognitive Reconstruction in Popular Culture, an Interdisciplinary Analysis Based on Historical Linguistics and Cultural Studies

Abstract: This study explores how popular culture has reshaped the linguistic system of the English language and the associated cognitive impacts. It has compared a corpus of over 60,000 lines, covering lexical, grammatical, and pragmatic features, from Shakespeare’s plays (1590-1608) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008-2023). An experimental study (n=60) complements this analysis, revealing how cultural industries reconstruct social cognition through multimodal linguistic symbolization. Integrating the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis with Baudrillard’s theory of symbolic consumption at the theoretical level, this study proposes a three-dimensional model encompassing culture, language, and cognition. This proves that popular culture is not merely a carrier of linguistic change, but also the core mechanism for constructing cognitive paradigms. The decrease in lexical density from 68% in Shakespeare to 45% in Marvel, as shown by the findings, points to improved linguistic economy. Additionally, the rate of clausal embedding dropped from 32% to 9%, indicating a trend of grammatical simplification. Experimental results demonstrate that modern audiences process visual symbols 40% faster than purely linguistic ones. This finding corroborates the predominant influence of multimodal language on cognitive processing, as illustrated by examples such as the gesture by Marvel’s Thanos. Ultimately, a new paradigm is provided for interdisciplinary research into language evolution, culture, and cognitive science.
