Abstract:
The innovative transformations of the encounter and union between humans and spirits are vividly developed and artistically embellished in three aspects within PU Songling’s
Liaozhai Zhiyi (
Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio). First, in these encounters and unions the female spirits seize the initiative, approaching mortals with bold, unsolicited marriage proposals. Second, the manner in which the encounters and unions involve uniting in passion, with the female spirits stimulate men’s wisdom by the passion. Third, the purpose of the encounters and unions serves as a redemption of men’s life. Specifically, they, therefore, could fulfill their salvation both spiritually and physically, with the female spirits acting as both mothers and wives. These innovative transformations reflect PU’s unique cultural perspectives. Namely, the perspectives are characterized with a male-centric view of man-and women relationship, a moral framework rooted in rational passion, and an aesthetic of balance and moderation.
