    YUAN Mei’s Interpretation of Kuaizhu Culture via Culinary Utensils, Literary Imagery and Concepts

    • 摘要: 筷箸文化源远流长、博大精深,是中华民族传统文化的重要组成部分。筷子不仅具有实用价值,更承载着丰富的文学意象和文学观念,体现出中华民族的哲学智慧。作为兼具美食家、文学家和诗学家三重身份的袁枚,对筷箸文化的阐发主要体现在饮食器用、文学意象和文学观念三方面:作为饮食餐具,筷子具有夹取、隔水、搅拌和制食的功能;作为文学意象,筷子承载着托物言志、借箸怀人、思友表情、以箸抒意及融情于景的文学蕴藉;作为文学观念的载体,筷箸文化则渗透于其慎用生僻字、改诗难于作诗和超超元箸等论述之中。

       

      Abstract: Kuaizhu (a literary word for chopsticks) culture, with its long history and profound significance, constitutes a vital component of traditional Chinese culture. Beyond their practical utility, they embody rich literary imagery and philosophical insights reflective of intellectual Chinese traditions. YUAN Mei, a figure renowned as a gourmet, writer, and poet, articulates the culture through three dimensions. Firstly, as culinary utensils, chopsticks are used for picking, acting as a liquid barrier, stirring, and food preparation. Secondly as literary images, they enable expressions of aspiration through objects, remembrance of others, emotional longing, and the infusion of sentiment into scenery. Thirdly, as a literary concept, it embodies distinct principles. Specifically, it advocates against unnecessary specialized or archaic characters, acknowledges the greater difficulty of revision compared to composition, and values sublime clarity.
