Abstract:
The Tibetan people in Sichuan are endowed with a wealth of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). However, the efforts for current English translations and international dissemination of the ICH have predominantly focused on only three areas: The Epic of Gesar, Tibetan opera, and Tibetan medicine. This article identifies four problems in these efforts. They include a scarcity of source materials for the translation and dissemination, a lack of standardized terminology, unbalanced research focus, and confusion regarding the roles of various stakeholders. To address these issues, this study proposes four paths for the multi-modal translation and international dissemination of Tibetan ICH in Sichuan. First, it focuses on building a multi-modal dissemination matrix to expand the scope and influence of its narratives. Second, it aims to unify ICH translation standards and give full play to the initiative of relevant dissemination stakeholders. Third, it seeks to enhance the functions of experiential venues while focusing on targeting the core audience. Fourth, it suggests capitalizing on artificial intelligence to promote the development of multi-modal ICH translation.
