Abstract:
Tihuashi (the poem inscription of a painting) is a traditional Chinese art form that integrates poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The standardization and accuracy of its English translation directly impact the international dissemination of Chinese culture. Taking
tihuashi as the research object, this study systematically analyzes the current state of its English translation. The issues are manifested in two major aspects: insufficient scholarly attention and non-standardized translation terms. To address the aforementioned issues, two steps are been conducted. Firstly, by drawing on XIAO Kairong’s application of Frame Semantics, this study analyzes the typical issues in existing translations of
tihuashi. Secondly, this study applies WEI Xiangqing’s four attributes of translation of terms of in humanities and social sciences: univocity, systematicity, accuracy, and motivation, as its analytical framework. Building upon this foundation, the research incorporates HAN Ziman’s classification for the term translation. Through this combined approach, the investigation systematically examines two aspects of English translations of
tihuashi: transliteration and free translation. The research reveals that current English translations of
tihuashi lack a unified standard, among other issues. Accordingly, this study proposes a reasonable English translation of
tihuashi. It is recommended that a rigorous translation review mechanism be established to enhance translation quality, thereby promoting the cross-cultural dissemination of traditional cultural Chinese terms. As a result, a practical possibility is provided for the mutual learning between the Chinese and Western civilizations.
