Abstract: Regarding the translational mediation of Chinese poetry outside China, poetic imagery, as a typical cultural meme, encapsulates the unique Chinese mode of thinking and the excellent traditional Chinese culture. The meme of poetic image evolves from physical images to poetic imagery, and further represents literary artistic conceptions and cultural spirits. It, therefore, exhibits rich layers and serves as a concentrated reflection of the artistic achievements in Chinese poetry. Image-based thinking constitutes a core driving force in the creation of Chinese poetry and an important manifestation of its literary significance. Through a typological analysis of image memes in Chinese poetry, it is found that the essence of their generation lies in taking images as forms and constructing meanings upon them. As a result, a special literary structure and mode of thinking are formed via language which can be tangible or intangible conveyance. The traces of the theme of poetic works can be explored by examining the combination of form and meaning in the meme of poetic imagery, and the cultural codes embedded within can be deciphered as well. The exploration and deciphering represent a highly challenging yet crucial step in translating and disseminating Chinese poetry and Chinese culture as well. Guided by image memes, the translationdl mediation of Chinese poetic works should not be confined to the interpretation of the overall meaning of the poems. Instead, it is essential to adopt a perspective of image memes. Specifically, the works undergo an in-depth textual analysis and artistic exploration. In this way, the original characteristics and cultural significance of memes of poetic images can be conveyed through analogical reasoning, reproduction, or various types of compensation in the target language.
