Abstract:
The Erzhu clan, with Erzhu Rong, the Khitan-Hu warrior, as its core figure, was a political and military group in the Northern Wei Dynasty. The rise of the clan was influenced by numerous factors, with the geography of the Bing-Si region (referring to the two areas of Bingzhou and Sizhou, which are located in the vicinity of today’s Taiyuan and Xinzhou in Shanxi Province, respectively) being one of the most significant. From the inception of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Erzhu Khitan-Hu tribe curried favor with and attached itself to the Northern Wei court. Therefore, the clan expanded its pastoral territories southward with political support from the court. As the political core shifted from Northern Xiurong (north of present-day Shuoxian County, Shanxi Province) to the Bing-Si region, the Erzhu clan leveraged the unique geographical advantages to rapidly rose to prominence. With increasing power, the clan adopted military conquests and political mergers to dominate the Shanxi region. As a result, it became a local force that influenced the political trajectory of the late Northern Wei Dynasty.
