Abstract:
Firstly, the term
po tian hong in the first chapter of
Jin Ping Mei Ci Hua (
Commentary on Golden Lotus) is actually a misrepresentation of
po tian guan.
Tian guan refers to a crucial mechanism of the heaven, symbolizing the North Star, rather than a heavenly gate. The phrases
po tian and bo tian guan, frequently appear in the drama literature of dynasties from Yuan and Ming, sharing semantic relevance but differing in their lexical motivation. The former often connotes wealth, while the latter typically denotes exceptional skill. Secondly, the term
xin liang xing in the eleventh chapter is incorrectly rendered and should be
xin xing, with
liang being interpolation. The variant textual traditions is disregard which results from both treating
xin liang as correct or misreading
liang as another
zi character. Thirdly, through a comparison of these variants and their contextual associations, it becomes evident that the description of WU Song’s appearance as
chou sou in the first chapter actually conveys a sense of constraint and restraint, rather than bravery or heroism.
