Abstract:
In late Eastern Han Dynasty, the famous general HUANG Zhong initially had no way to advance his career. So he joined LIU Bei's group and was appreciated for his talent. He followed LIU's army into Shu (current Sichuan Province) and played an important role in the battle to capture Yizhou (current Chengdu). In the subsequent battle in Hanzhong, HUANG led his troops into battle, overcame obstacles, and killed XIAHOU Yuan, a well-known general from Caowei Regime, making significant contribution to LIU's group. LIU was crowned the King of Hanzhong and HUANG was appointed as the Rear General and Marquis of Guannei, enjoying almost the same status as GUAN Yu and ZHANG Fei who were fearless generals of Shuhan Regime and were LIU's brothers by oaths. There are few historical records about HUANG's deeds, while HUANG's image has been enriched in literary works, e.g.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms. His unique image has been defined as "old age brings forth new strength", which has been passed down and praised by people for more than one thousand years.
