Abstract: In Travels of Lao Can, we can find the influence of Chinese traditional fiction as well as the shadow of western novels. The book is characterized by the combination between the tradition and the innovation and can be seen as a sample of transformation from tradition and modernity of Chinese fiction. LIU E’s writing of this book is undoubtedly literary creation with consideration from reality instead of literature. This is shown in its strong subjectivity and designing of structure and top- ics according to actual requirement. And this endowed its text with the artistic features that are different from the traditional fiction and the works of its time.
