Abstract: Compared with the “meta-work” of DU Shi-niang‘ A Love-betrayer's Story, FENG Meng-long's A Legend of DU Shi-niang has presented a more “credible” story in terms of real background, refining plots, intensified characters and simplified narration. It has met people's need for and explained the educated moral conceptions, and become the classical work vastly accepted by people. However, this has covered the rich imagination brought about by the simple narration of “meta-story”, and constrained the readers' questioning of affairs of human life. The classical works might become the spiritual shackle due to their classicality. This is the paradox phenomenon often seen in the Chinese classical novels.
