Abstract: The two novels, Stendhal' The Red and the Black and LU Yao's Life, are the two mirrors of their own time. Though there exist some differences in their backgrounds, living places and cultures between the protagonists of the two novels Gulian and GAO Jia-lin, they were in the transition of old and new times, they have shown great similarities between their struggling courses and tragic fates.
