Abstract:
The novel Outlaws of the Marshes compares itself with The Romance of Three Kingdoms not only in terms of introduction to some figures’ life stories, looking, weapons and wisdom, but in other aspects like the description of figures’ verve, generals’ fighting, exaggeration of scenes and narration of some combats. The various “three-kingdom elements” in Outlaws of the Marshes show that this novel was deeply influenced by The Romance of Three Kingdoms. Through the study of simple or subtle description of fighting and the employment of cold and hot weapons, this paper has drawn the conclusion that LUO Guan-zhong was older than SHI Nai-an and the work The Romance of Three Kingdoms appeared earlier than Outlaws of the Marshes.
