Imagination and Restoration: Narratives Conncerning Three Capitals in Novels of Early and Middle Qing Dynasty

Abstract: The narratives concerning three capitals, Chang’an, Beijing and Nanjing, in novels of early and middle Qing Dynasty are characterized by summarization and the striking feature of time as well. Among them, Chang’an, as a cultural symbol, appeared in the imaginative world of ancient writers. This reposed their nostalgia in prosperous Han and Tang Dynasties. So the city had obvious fictional feature. The narration concerning Beijing was like a portrait. The description of citizen’s life and culture in detail reflected the writers’ view toward and interpretation of the city. The one concerning Nanjing inherited the historical tradition and gave the modern flavor. Its connection with the daily life of ordinary people was much closer than that of any novels before.
