Abstract:
A major change took place to the image of Judge DEE (his name is DI Renjie (630-700) in Chinese
pin yin) during the Qing (1644-1911) Dynasty. The Image of DEE was shifted from a righteous and prudent politician to an honest and upright official who could precisely settle a lawsuit. The novelists of the dynasfy mainly completed the characterization of DEE as an honest and upright official from three aspects: his moral character, his attitude to law enforcement, and his judicial arts. From the perspective of characterization, DEE’s image of an honest official is reflected by the process of moving from historical reality to artistic one. The image, through the literary stage set by fictions of complex legal cases, is popular with common people. The underlying reason displays common people’s call for a just and fair government. The story of DEE is used to allude to politics in Qing Dynasty, and to express their wish back to orthodoxy. Behind this cultural phenomenon, both the consciousness of the worship of an honest and upright official and humanistic imagination of internal sage and the external emperor are reflected.
